Southwest announced the biggest overhaul of Rapid Rewards in the program's history at its October 15 Media Day, and it takes effect January 1, 2027: A-List becomes Silver, A-List Preferred becomes Gold, and a brand-new Platinum tier sits on top with unlimited Companion Pass trips. The announcement reads like a member-friendly upgrade. The details in the fine print read like something else.
The part Southwest did not put in its announcement: paid-flight earning on its two most expensive fares drops sharply. Choice Preferred falls from 10 to 8 points per dollar and Choice Extra falls from 14 to 10. Combined with a smaller elite bonus for Gold — 60%, down from the 100% A-List Preferred members earn today — the airline's most loyal travelers take a real haircut: a Choice Extra fare that earns 28 points per dollar for A-List Preferred today earns just 16 for Gold in 2027.
The second un-announced bomb is the end of the credit-card shortcut to the Companion Pass. Welcome bonuses, referral bonuses, anniversary points, category bonus points, and hotel or car partner earnings will earn exactly zero Tier Qualifying Points from January 1, 2027. The game that made Southwest's pass famous — open two cards, hit the minimum spends, collect most of the 135,000 qualifying points from the bonuses — is over.
Exact offer and terms
- Effective date: January 1, 2027. Announced October 15, 2026 at Southwest's Media Day. Current A-List and A-List Preferred benefits run through December 31, 2026.
- Silver (replaces A-List): 35,000 Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) or 25 qualifying one-way flights. Members who would have qualified for A-List for 2027 based on 2026 activity convert automatically. Perks: Preferred or Standard seat selection at booking, Extra Legroom upgrade within 48 hours of departure, Group 1 boarding, one free checked bag, 40% flight-earning bonus (up from 25%).
- Gold (replaces A-List Preferred): 65,000 TQPs or 50 qualifying one-way flights (TQP bar drops from 70,000; flight bar rises from 40). Perks: any seat at booking including Extra Legroom, boarding before Group 1, two free checked bags, two premium drinks per flight, 60% flight-earning bonus (down from 100%).
- Platinum (new top tier): 140,000 TQPs or 100 qualifying one-way flights. Perks: unlimited Companion Pass trips, 120% flight-earning bonus, three free checked bags, boards before Gold members, any seat at booking including Extra Legroom.
- Fare earning rates from 2027: Basic 2x, Choice 6x (unchanged), Choice Preferred 8x (down from 10x), Choice Extra 10x (down from 14x) per dollar of base fare.
- Milestone Rewards (new): at 20,000 TQPs or 15 flights, choose 2,000 Rapid Rewards points or two Preferred Seat Certificates; at 95,000 TQPs or 75 flights, receive three Companion Pass trips (each trip works for one one-way or round-trip itinerary — use a round-trip for full value).
- Companion Pass in 2027: the separate Companion Pass qualifying-points currency is retired. Pass trips now come from the TQP/flight track: three trips via the 95,000-TQP milestone, unlimited via Platinum. A pass earned under 2026 rules stays valid through December 31, 2027.
- Credit cards: from 2027, every Southwest Rapid Rewards card — including the Plus, which never earned tier points — earns 1 TQP per $1 spent, with no cap. Welcome bonuses, referral bonuses, anniversary points, category bonus points, and partner spend earn zero TQPs.
- Transition rules: members who earn A-List Preferred for 2027 based on 2026 flying become Gold and keep the 100% earning bonus through December 31, 2027 — a one-year grace period before the 60% rate bites. Cardmembers approved on or before December 2, 2026 whose welcome bonus posts under the new program still get it counted toward Companion Pass. Cardmembers also get a one-time 10,000-TQP boost upon reaching 130,000 TQPs in 2027, effectively making Platinum 130,000 for cardholders.
- Later in 2027: a new premium Southwest credit card from Chase with Icon Lounge access, international award redemptions via Icelandair, China Airlines, and Etihad (spring 2027), points-for-car-rental redemption (November 2026), and points for seat upgrades (late 2027).
The math: the 28-to-16 cut is the whole story
Run the numbers per fare, per tier, exactly as Southwest's own pages set them up. Today, an A-List Preferred member buying a Choice Extra fare earns 14 base points per dollar times the 100% elite bonus: 28 points per dollar. In 2027, Gold on the same fare earns 10 base points times the 60% bonus: 16 points per dollar. On $1,000 of Choice Extra base fare, that is 28,000 points today versus 16,000 in 2027 — a difference of 12,000 points, worth about $168 at the commonly cited 1.4-cent-per-point value of Southwest points. A 43% cut to earn on the airline's priciest fare, delivered to the airline's most loyal customers, and Southwest's announcement said nothing about it.
Even the new Platinum does not restore today's earning. At 120% on a 10x Choice Extra base, Platinum earns 22 points per dollar — still 21% below the 28 an A-List Preferred member earns today, and Platinum costs 140,000 TQPs or 100 flights, roughly double the old A-List Preferred bar of 70,000 points or 40 flights.
Silver members actually come out slightly ahead on most fares: 40% is better than A-List's 25%, so a Choice fare earns 8.4 points per dollar for Silver in 2027 versus 7.5 for A-List today. The new program compresses the elite tiers: the bottom tier improves, the middle tier gets hollowed out, and the top tier is reserved for travelers who were already buying Southwest's most expensive tickets in bulk.
The Companion Pass math is harsher still. Under 2027 rules, a 75,000-point welcome bonus — which today gets a traveler more than halfway to the 135,000-point pass — contributes exactly zero TQPs. Earning the three-trip milestone on card spend alone would require $95,000 in purchases; unlimited trips via Platinum would require $140,000 ($130,000 with the cardmember boost). The card-first Companion Pass strategy is finished. The flight-first strategy remains: 75 flights gets you three trips, 100 flights gets you unlimited.
Who benefits—and who should skip it
Benefits: true Southwest road warriors on premium fares. If you already buy Choice Preferred and Choice Extra in volume and you can reach Platinum's 140,000-TQP bar, the 120% bonus plus unlimited Companion Pass trips is the richest elite package Southwest has ever offered. The 100-flight path also makes Platinum the first tier worth chasing on segments rather than spend.
Benefits: 2027-transitioned A-List Preferred members. If you qualified for A-List Preferred for 2027 under 2026 rules, you become Gold but keep the 100% earning bonus through December 31, 2027 — earning 20 points per dollar on Choice Extra all year while paying the lower Gold qualification bar. That grace year is the single best deal in the transition.
Benefits: Silver aspirants and casual loyalists. The 40% bonus (up from 25%) and the new 20,000-TQP milestone mean light-but-regular flyers get more recognition than under the old two-tier system.
Should skip it: credit-card Companion Pass chasers. If your plan was to earn the pass primarily through card bonuses, 2027 kills it. Either earn the pass under 2026 rules by December 31, 2026 (see below) or find another airline's card game.
Should skip it: Basic-fare flyers. Nothing changes for you — 2 points per dollar, same as today — and the new tiers are priced for premium-fare spend. Don't chase status you were never close to.
Awardtrail analysis
The framing of this overhaul is "more rewarding for members," but the arithmetic says it is more rewarding for Southwest. A-List Preferred members on premium fares lose 43% of their earning power with no compensation; the grace year only delays the cut to 2028, when the transitioned members land on the 60% rate. The airline gains two things: premium-fare travelers must spend more to hold their earning rate, and the Companion Pass stops leaking to bonus-only earners.
What to do before you fly under the new rules: if the Companion Pass is your target, 2026 is the last year of the old game — earn 135,000 qualifying points (or 100 flights) by December 31, 2026, and a pass you earn this year is valid through December 31, 2027. If you want the welcome bonus to count, apply for a Southwest card on or before December 2, 2026. If you were going to earn A-List Preferred anyway this year, lock it in: the 100% grace bonus through all of 2027 is the most generous earning rate Southwest will offer at Gold again.
What to watch: the new premium Southwest credit card from Chase in 2027 — the first Southwest card with lounge access — could rebalance the math if it brings elite-tier shortcuts or big TQP earning, and the spring 2027 international partner redemptions will test whether Southwest points can buy seats on Etihad and China Airlines at anything like a reasonable rate. And mark January 1, 2028 on your calendar: that is when the grace-period Gold members join the rest of the program on 16 points per dollar.
