Frequently Asked Questions: The Platinum Card® from American Express

Can I downgrade Amex Platinum to a free card?

No. Amex does not allow product changing charge cards (Platinum, Gold, Green) into credit cards (Blue Cash, Everyday). The lowest annual fee charge card is the Amex Green ($150). To keep points for free, apply for the Amex Everyday ($0) or Blue Business Plus ($0) before cancelling.

How long do I have to cancel Amex Platinum for a full refund?

You have exactly 30 calendar days from the date the annual fee posts on your billing statement. Cancelling on day 31 or later yields zero refund for personal cards.

Will cancelling Amex Platinum hurt my credit score?

Amex Platinum is a charge card without a preset credit limit, meaning it does not contribute to your credit utilization ratio. Cancelling it will not spike your utilization, though the account will eventually age off your report after 10 years.

The Annual Fee Renewal Playbook

Follow these three fundamental rules before paying any annual fee on Amex, Chase, Capital One, or Citi cards.

Rule #1
The 30-Day Refund Rule

Never cancel or downgrade before the annual fee posts. Wait until statement #12 shows the charge.

All major banks offer a 30 to 37-day grace window for a 100% full refund.

Rule #2
Always Ask Retention First

Before closing or downgrading, ask: "Are there any retention offers available on my account?"

A single 20k–50k point retention bonus or $200 statement credit easily pays for the renewal.

Rule #3
Product Change Over Cancelling

Downgrading to a $0 card preserves your credit line, avoids credit score damage, and keeps points alive.

Product changes never incur a hard credit inquiry or take up a new 5/24 slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Effective Annual Fee (EAF) calculated?

Effective Annual Fee (EAF) equals your card's nominal annual fee minus your real, subjective valuation of the credits and perks you actually use. For example, if the Amex Platinum annual fee is $695 and you realistically value its credits and lounge access at $800, your Effective Annual Fee is -$105 (meaning the card pays you $105/year to keep it).

When should I downgrade or cancel a credit card when the annual fee posts?

Wait until the annual fee actually posts to your billing statement (around day 365). Under the federal CARD Act, banks cannot change products or fee structures before month 12. Most issuers (Amex, Chase, Capital One, Citi) give you a 30 to 37-day grace window from the fee post date to downgrade or cancel for a 100% full refund.

Does product changing or downgrading hurt my credit score?

No. A product change (downgrade) does NOT generate a hard inquiry on your credit report. Your existing credit line, account history, and credit age remain intact. It is almost always better to downgrade to a $0 annual fee card than to cancel outright.

Will I lose my points if I cancel my credit card?

For transferable bank points (Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou), closing your only card in that rewards currency causes all accumulated points to be forfeited immediately. Always ensure you have a $0 annual fee companion card (such as Amex Blue Business Plus, Chase Freedom, or Citi Custom Cash) or transfer your points to airline/hotel partners before closing.

How do retention offers work?

When your annual fee posts, call or chat your issuer's retention department stating that you are evaluating closing or downgrading due to the fee. Banks frequently present statement credits ($150-$400) or bonus points (20,000-50,000 points) to convince you to keep the card for another 12 months. Amex generally allows one retention offer every 13 months per card.
