Even if you place a high value on those miles (like 2 cents each, which is generous), you're still effectively paying a hefty premium for Gold status and those Loyalty Points. For most of us savvy travelers, there are much better ways to earn miles and status without dropping five grand upfront. Unless you *really* need Gold status right now and have money burning a hole in your pocket, you're likely better off exploring other options or just spending that cash on a fantastic vacation.
