Two of the best transfer bonuses on Citi's menu expire Saturday, October 24 — and one of them has never been offered before. Citi ThankYou points move to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank with a 30% bonus and to Avianca LifeMiles with a 25% bonus, both through 11:59 p.m. ET Saturday.
The JAL bonus is the bigger story. Citi added JAL as its 20th transfer partner on September 20, and the 30% launch bonus is the first transfer bonus to JAL Mileage Bank in Citi's history. The LifeMiles bonus is the opposite of rare — it has run ten times since 2018 and has never gone above 25% — but the ceiling matters: this is the best rate Citi will give you on LifeMiles, and it ends Saturday.
Here is the catch that decides whether you actually get the bonus: Citi's terms say the bonus applies to transfers completed inside the promotional window, not transfers you start inside it. Citi also says transfers to these partners typically post within 24 hours but can take up to five business days. A transfer started Friday night could complete after the window closes — and arrive with no bonus.
Exact offer and eligibility
- Japan Airlines Mileage Bank: 30% transfer bonus, September 20 – October 24, 2026, ending 11:59 p.m. ET Saturday. The bonus applies to transfers completed between September 20, 12:01 a.m. ET and October 24, 11:59 p.m. ET.
- Avianca LifeMiles: 25% transfer bonus on the same dates and deadline, ending 11:59 p.m. ET Saturday.
- Full ratio (premium Citi cards): cardholders with the Citi Strata Elite, Citi Strata Premier, Citi Prestige, or AT&T Access More get 1,300 JAL miles or 1,250 LifeMiles for every 1,000 ThankYou points transferred.
- Reduced ratio (no-annual-fee Citi cards): holders of the Citi Strata, Double Cash, Custom Cash, ThankYou Preferred, and similar no-fee cards transfer at the lower 1:0.7 base ratio — that means 1,000 ThankYou points become just 910 JAL miles or 875 LifeMiles, even with the bonus.
- No-fee cardholders with a premium card: points transfer at the full 1:1 ratio if you also hold an annual-fee ThankYou card and combine the balances first.
- Minimums and increments: 1,000 ThankYou points minimum per transfer, in 1,000-point increments. LifeMiles transfers cap at 500,000 ThankYou points per transaction.
- Timing: Citi says transfers typically complete within 24 hours but may take up to five business days. Transfers to LifeMiles often post within minutes; JAL posting times are less established since the partnership is barely a month old.
- Registration: no registration required for either bonus — it applies automatically at transfer time. You must have a JAL Mileage Bank or LifeMiles account in your own name; the name on your Citi account must match the loyalty account exactly, or the transfer can fail.
- Irreversible: both transfers are one-way. Points cannot be moved back to Citi.
- JAL miles expire: JAL Mileage Bank miles expire 36 months after earning, with no extensions. Transferred LifeMiles do not count toward LifeMiles elite status.
Do the math: the bonus is generous, the fine print decides everything
The headline ratios are excellent if you hold a premium Citi card. At 1,300 JAL miles per 1,000 ThankYou points, a 55,000-mile JAL business-class award from the U.S. to Japan costs an effective 42,308 ThankYou points — round up to 43,000 in Citi's 1,000-point increments. A 60,000-mile partner business-class award, like Dallas to Paris on Air France, prices out to 47,000 ThankYou points. Cash fares on those seats run several thousand dollars, so the per-point return is outstanding.
The LifeMiles math is just as strong: a 55,000-LifeMiles one-way business-class award to Europe costs 44,000 ThankYou points with the 25% bonus, and short domestic United awards from 7,500 LifeMiles drop to 6,000 ThankYou points. LifeMiles adds no fuel surcharges on Star Alliance partner awards, which is the main reason to route through Avianca instead of another program.
But three numbers work against the headline. First, the transfer timer: "typically 24 hours, occasionally up to five business days" against a hard Saturday cutoff means the effective deadline is today or tomorrow morning, not Saturday night. Second, the card-tier trap: a Double Cash holder moving 1,000 points gets 910 JAL miles, a ratio of 0.91 — barely better than the standard 1:1 premium-card ratio with no bonus at all. And third, JAL miles die after 36 months. Transferring speculatively into a currency whose flagship award — premium cabins to Japan — is famously scarce, on a 36-month fuse, is how points get stranded.
Who benefits—and who should skip it
Transfer now if: you have found a JAL or LifeMiles award seat on your exact dates and cabin and just need to top up. That is the single valid use case for both bonuses. JAL Mileage Bank holders eyeing a 55,000-mile business-class seat to Japan are getting the first and possibly only 30% bonus Citi ever offers — book the seat, transfer exactly the miles you need, and do it by Thursday morning at the latest.
Also fine: topping up an existing JAL or LifeMiles balance by a few thousand points to reach a known redemption. Small top-ups are low risk.
Skip it if: you have no award in mind. JAL miles expire after 36 months, LifeMiles is a program with a history of quiet devaluations, and neither transfer reverses. No-fee Citi cardholders should skip large moves too — the 910/875 ratios erase most of the bonus's value. And if you do not already have a JAL Mileage Bank account registered with a name matching your Citi profile character for character, you are cutting it too close to the deadline to fix that now.
Awardtrail analysis
The JAL bonus is genuinely worth acting on — a first-ever 30% bonus to a partner whose miles book some of the best premium-cabin value in the industry. But the structure of the offer turns "ends Saturday" into "do it today." Bonus eligibility follows the completion date, transfers can take five business days, and Saturday is a 24-hour clock that is already ticking. Transfer what you need for a confirmed seat, in 1,000-point increments, and confirm your card is on the premium tier before you start.
The LifeMiles bonus requires no urgency narrative — 25% is the standing ceiling and it comes back regularly — but the same rule applies: find the seat first, transfer second, and never build a LifeMiles balance on speculation. The bonus is a tool for closing a gap, not a sale worth buying into blind.

Why This Matters for Your Strategy
News in the points-and-miles world moves fast, and promotional changes often have a short window. If this announcement affects a card or program you hold, log into your awardtrail dashboard to check your current benefit usage, bonus progress, and whether a transfer or redemption makes sense right now — before terms change.
As a general rule: transfer points only when you have a specific redemption in mind — transfers are almost always one-way and non-reversible. If you're unsure of the value, check our redemption guides before acting.
