American Express and Airbnb launched an exclusive partnership on October 22, and it is a bigger change than another portal integration. More than one million Airbnb listings are now bookable through a new Homes tab on AmexTravel.com and in the Amex Travel App, and prepaid bookings earn Membership Rewards points — 5X for Platinum Card Members, the same rate Amex Travel pays on prepaid hotels.
The mechanics matter. You link your American Express and Airbnb accounts once, start the search inside Amex Travel, and complete the reservation on Airbnb. From that point the stay is Airbnb's, not Amex's: host messages, co-travelers, changes, cancellations, and support all stay on Airbnb. What Amex adds is the earning — and, for Platinum members, two credits that previously stopped at hotels.
The Platinum Card's $600 annual Lodging Credit — the benefit renamed from the $600 Hotel Credit — now works on Airbnb Luxe, Airbnb's top tier of professionally vetted luxury homes. A qualifying Luxe booking also unlocks a new $250 annual credit on Airbnb Experiences. The catch is the tier: the credits ignore the million ordinary listings completely. They only touch Luxe, where a two-night stay routinely costs more than the credit is worth.
Exact offer and eligibility
- Live now: launched October 22, 2026, for eligible U.S. Card Members, via the Homes tab on AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App.
- Account linking required: connect your American Express and Airbnb accounts once; the reservation itself is completed through Airbnb.
- Earning, prepaid bookings through Amex Travel only: Consumer and Business Platinum earn 5X Membership Rewards points; all other eligible Membership Rewards cards earn 2X.
- Consumer Classic Green: earns 3X Membership Rewards points on travel, including bookings made directly with Airbnb — it does not need the Amex Travel route.
- $600 Lodging Credit (Platinum, consumer and business): prepaid Airbnb Luxe bookings of two nights or more made through Amex Travel qualify, paid as up to $300 in statement credits semi-annually — the same cap and cadence as prepaid hotel bookings.
- $250 Airbnb Experiences Credit (Platinum): unlocked each year after a qualifying prepaid Luxe booking through Amex Travel; up to $250 in statement credits on eligible Airbnb Experiences purchased directly from Airbnb through the remainder of that calendar year. Experiences that send you to a third-party platform to pay are not eligible.
- Earn only: there is no Pay with Points option for these bookings. The stay is paid by card on Airbnb; Membership Rewards are earned, never spent, in this partnership.
- Servicing: after booking you can view the trip in Amex Travel, but the stay itself is managed entirely on Airbnb.
The math — and where it stops
Run a typical booking through it. A $1,500 prepaid family rental booked through Amex Travel on a Platinum Card earns 7,500 Membership Rewards points. At a conservative 2 cents per point in transfer value, that is about $150 back — versus 3,000 points (about $60) at the 2X rate other Membership Rewards cards earn on the same booking. The 5X rate is a real upgrade on spending that previously earned almost nothing.
The credits are narrower than the headline. Take a $4,000 two-night Luxe stay: it earns 20,000 points (roughly $400 in value) and can absorb this half-year's $300 lodging credit, and it unlocks the $250 Experiences credit — up to $950 of combined value on the right trip. But Luxe is Airbnb's most expensive shelf: multi-thousand-dollar nightly rates are normal, availability is a fraction of the million-listing catalog, and the $300 semi-annual cap does not grow just because the house did. The credit is a discount on a splurge, not a way to make an ordinary Airbnb stay cheaper.
Two more limits deserve emphasis. Only prepaid bookings earn the bonus rates, so pay-at-property or pay-over-time arrangements earn less or nothing extra. And because the reservation is completed and serviced on Airbnb, you give up nothing by routing through Amex Travel — but you also gain no Amex Travel servicing if the stay goes wrong. Price-check the same home on Airbnb directly before booking; the inventory should match, and the total with fees is the number that counts.
Who benefits—and who should skip it
Benefits: Platinum and Business Platinum members who already book Airbnbs and can now earn 5X on that spending for free; families and groups booking whole homes, where prepaid totals are large enough for 5X to matter; anyone already planning a Luxe trip, who can now stack the $300 semi-annual lodging credit and the $250 Experiences credit on a booking they were making anyway; Classic Green holders, whose 3X travel rate quietly covers direct Airbnb bookings too.
Skip it: anyone thinking of booking Luxe purely to chase the credits — spending $4,000 to "earn" $550 back is not a deal. Non-Platinum Membership Rewards holders get a respectable 2X but nothing worth changing cards over. Points redeemers should note there is still no way to spend Membership Rewards on Airbnb. And if you were hoping this softens the Platinum Card's $895 annual fee on its own, it does not — it is one more credit to manage on a card that already demands management.
Awardtrail analysis
For existing Platinum members, this is an unambiguous win: link the accounts once, route prepaid Airbnb bookings through the Homes tab, and a large category of travel spending jumps to 5X. Do not let the credits steer the trip. Book Luxe only when Luxe was already the plan, take the $300 and the $250 as found money, and remember the Experiences credit expires with the calendar year in which the Luxe booking unlocked it. What to watch next: whether pay-over-time bookings ever earn the bonus rates, and whether points redemption — absent today — arrives later. Until then, this is the best earning rate available on Airbnb stays, attached to the narrowest slice of Airbnb's catalog.

Why This Matters for Your Strategy
News in the points-and-miles world moves fast, and promotional changes often have a short window. If this announcement affects a card or program you hold, log into your awardtrail dashboard to check your current benefit usage, bonus progress, and whether a transfer or redemption makes sense right now — before terms change.
As a general rule: transfer points only when you have a specific redemption in mind — transfers are almost always one-way and non-reversible. If you're unsure of the value, check our redemption guides before acting.
